Actually, as far as north america is concerned, it would be monsanto and Pioneer that control the vast majority of "genetic parent material" as you put it. I know dow created the trait but now that it's out there it's all about the hybrids you create with it.

As far as why Monsanto gets the bad press i would think it must have something to do with the fact that GMO are their claim to fame while the seed industry is only a portion of both dupont and syngenta's portfolios
