Why does Monsanto have such a negative public image compared to the other seed companies?

Subject: The issue that roubles me

Henderson, Minnesota
Is 2 of the world's largest chemical companies, Dow and Monsanto, control virtually all of the corn genetic parent material. In the future could Monsanto or Dow control all aspects of the corn growing industry. For example, if you buy seed from a Dow Company, you can only use Dow chemicals on it, and that genetically altered corn can only be sold to a grain company that will accept it? Think about it.
Makes me wonder if someone shouldn't start improving open pollinated varieties.
