Central Iowa | The story goes something like Caterpillar way back in the day thought about designing and marketing a tracks kit for current Ag tractors instead of designing and manufacturing an entire tracks tractor. Sort of like an aftermarket deal, the kits where setup to be bolt on and steer the tractor only via the rear brakes. This particular 4955 had a bunch of brake modifications to get its brakes to live for any amount of time in that configuration. Caterpillar must have determined that this was not a very practical way to steer a tracks tractor but they must have seen value in having tracks on a tractor instead of wheels because as they say the rest is history.
Now, I am not sure if Caterpillar had two 4955s or just one. But this particular 4955 that I posted pictures of rusting out on the University of Wisconsin campus a few years ago has since found a new home, ironically very near Waterloo, IA as UW didn’t have much use for it anymore. Here is a picture of it from this year.
