| This past season we compared 1) drilled radish on 7.5" rows with 2) radish on 30" rows with lots of volunteer oats with 3) straight volunteer oats.
The 2 radish treatments were not significantly different but out yielded the straight oat treatment by > 10%.
We planted almost 4 times as much radish seed where we drilled on 7.5" rows as compared to where we planted on 30" rows using our corn planter. The wide row radishes were planted into a thick stand of 1" tall volunteer oats and were clearly suppressed by the oats but boosted corn yields > 10% as compared to corn following volunteer oats with no radish.
We did our best to plant the corn over top of the radish rows but may have been off as much as 6-12" in some places because we were not using GPS guidance.
We planted a lot more radishes on 30" rows this fall (a comparison of 2 radish varieties) and look forward to planting corn over top of the radish rows in 2012. The preceding crop was wheat in this case.
