Check to see if the linoleum is attached to a second subfloor of plywood (original subfloor then a layer of plywood with the linoleum applied to it) if its this system, get under the edge of the plywood and remove the top layer of plywood and the linoleum together. This will allow you to match elevations when using 3/4 solid flooring or replace the plywood with new and use engineered wood flooring which is generally about 5/16 thick. Nephew just did this in his new to him house, built in the 1950's.
