Chebanse, IL.....

Thanks for the explanation. Never knew anything like that existed! Is the crib still there? A "1950s" crib would certainly be a modern one. I can only think of a couple in this area that were built in the '50s.

We had a couple w/inside elevators similar to what you describe...only about 50 yrs older! The drag chain in the floor went across to the cup elevator that went vertically up to the top. Of course, the problem on ANY of these single elevator (or single cupalo) type cribs was the distance that ear corn would slide down the chute after the elevator dumped it. Gravity will only allow it to go so far when you don't have enough slope to the chute. The crib we filled that had that internal elevator made it slow filling. Like many other things of that era (early '50s-60s), it was designed for horse-equipment. So, we had larger windows cut in the ends of the cribs (didn't all cribs have windows in the gable ends??) & stuck our portable elevators in them. But, that meant you had to move the elevator twice, once thru each end. But, it was still lots faster than working with a 1920 era cup elevator & cable/chain lift mechanism for the wagons.

I thought it would be longer than 60' to hold 18K bus. There's a crib still standing just a few mis S of me with 4 cupalos on it, I believe...maybe 5. I'll try & get photos ASAP.
