Minnesota
We have a GE Spectra smooth top electric, 6 years old, and no problems. It's very nice for keeping the smooth top clean. Don't store canned goods above it as I've been told the glass top could break if something falls on it. As for boil overs, I've had a few; just clean it up and it's fine. I can all the time with heavy pots and water bath method and it works just fine. Many years ago our independent appliance repairman told us which brands to buy and which brands require the least repairs; and which brands are least expensive on their replacement parts; it would be a good idea to find one of these guys in your area and 'pick his brain' as to what brands and models HE buys for his home :) I think it was GE that had the least expensive smooth top replacement cost; thankfully I've never had to find out.
