SW Saskatchewan
If you go back through the Ag-econ thesis at the University of Saskatchewan and read the correspondence between the political leaders and lobbyists at the time, you will learn just how political devious and satanic was the establishment of the 1943 wheat board(remember it had existed twice before in Canadian legislation). The saintly John Bracken fell hook, line and sinker for the patriotism argument and never allowed the Progressives in the Progressive Conservative Party to debate the issue.

It was sold as a method to maintain the flow of food to Great Britain which was viewed as a noble and patriotic choice. But behind the public veil was the concern about the redistribution of wealth in Canada- if the price of wheat was to reach the wartime prices existing in the united states, the laborers in Central Canada would see soaring food costs, plus income from foriegn sales would accrue to the wheat growing areas, restricting the flow of capital needed to industrialize Central Canada to the level that allowed it to produce the AVRO Arrow.

The pre 1998 wheat board was an instrument of govt policy, now the destruction of it is a result of ideology. Only in the 1998-2011 period did we have a farmer orientated wheat board, but that is just one thing that the little twerp from Ontario can't stand-anything that would allow the growth of the prairies at the expense of the central provinces or thew Alberta oil patch.

Best wishes to you post august 2012
