We came really close in 71 also and had we not went off the gold standard and made foreign countries take our fiat dollars instead of letting them have the gold (there wasn't nearly enough gold to cover the outstanding obligations), the US would have been bankrupt then. That gave us a 40 year reprieve. Now we are there again.
