  Yes, that's what my dad did for years in cornstalks and sometimes other trashy plowing.  I'd suggest a little longer, though, if it's really tall stuff you're trying to keep down.  And 1/8" is sure minimum.  Others suggest #8 or 9 and that sounds better to me.  He fastened the wires to each coulter, at the bearing area.  The technique is really effective.
