Subject: Re: Soil PH tester

Portable soil pH testing is not normally a good idea. I would not recommend any that I have seen through the years. The usual problem is that soil in the field varies so widely in moisture content and other factors that even a meter that may be well made can't give good consistent readings. It's best to go to the lab, make uniform solutions of soil in water of known quality, calibrate the meter for accuracy under the specific set of conditions and read all of them alike. I have actually used a conductivity bridge type portable through the years to get an estimate of the situation when there is no other alternative; but I never feel very good about trusting it until I see a test result from a lab I am familiar with.
