| This might tweak a few people, but I suspect some of the problem in Ill is planting population. The Western corn belt produces in dry conditions every year, but we also don't drop 38,000 seeds, more like 24,000(on dryland). That is a risk management strategy for the EXPECTATION that we won't get a inch of rain every three days. BTW, for those who think they need those pops to get yields, I still get 180-195 on dryland @ 24,000 population when I get adequate rainfall(adequate to me is 3" in July and 3" in Aug), I am in a 26" per year area. If I plant irrigation population(33,500) in the corners where the pivot won't reach they'll burn up. Many have been pushing the envelope on populations to achieve higher yields, and that is a risk, and you see what happens when you don't get the rain. Crop insurance still pays though, even though is was risky judgement by the operator. | |
