torn - Now, if your argument is that they are both "closed" as far as the **average** user is concerned, then I would agree. But that doesn't appear to be your argument.

That is exactly what I have been trying to convey. And that should be the only thing of any concern since 99.9% of the market is compiled of this type of user. This is why I find it so humorous that Android is touted as "open" - when only 1/10th of one percent of people out there are "geeky" enough to actually perform some of these things.

As for not being able to mess with source code on closed OS's - I know this to not be a fact. I work with a guy who messes with the source code in Win XP all the time. There are custom builds of at least Win XP (maybe later ones by now too) on file sharing sites. And those who are heavy into customized jailbreak iOS HAVE to change source code in order to do what they do. The different versions of iOS are all out there on the net for anyone to grab ahold of and do as they wish - same as Windows, Linux, or any other software.

This is a direct copy/paste of the first line of the Wikipedia article on Jailbreaking:

"iOS jailbreaking, or simply jailbreaking, is the process of removing the limitations imposed by Apple on devices running the iOS operating system through use of custom kernels."

The keywords there are "custom kernals" - which proves that the iOS kernal (source code) can be modified.
