| Well, you may not be downloading music, but chances are you may want some apps to put on it.
Actually, you won it just a tad too soon. Around mid Oct is when iOS 5 will be released and any new iPad with 5 installed will not need iTunes - even to activate it. Chances are once you get iTunes installed, you will be asked to update the OS on the iPad too - depends on the date of manufacture. If it has been built very recently, it may already have the latest update.
Look at it this way - once you get through the pain of setting it up, you are set to go for the life of the device. You'd have to do the same process with an Android tablet (set up a Google account if you didn't have one, give your credit card info to make app purchases, etc). Android would not require a software package like iTunes, but you don't have the security that iTunes provides as far as a total system backup if you ever lose your iPad or destroy it somehow. | |
