Sorry, but it is not just an "Apple thing". There are very, very few sites that don't play nice in mobile Safari either...
Fewer in Android since it is Flash friendly... And I'm not talking mobile optimized websites. I'm talking full, what you see on your computer websites...

I also disagree that apps lack features of a website - quite the opposite, in fact. Apps almost always give a richer user experience over a simple website - thus, their popularity.
MOST apps simplify the website to make it easier to use on a mobile device. SOME apps are as good or better UI's than the actual website. FEW could replace a website entirely.
