Sorry, but it is not just an "Apple thing". There are very, very few sites that don't play nice in mobile Safari either - but it does not change the fact that ALL smartphones and tablets on the market today are app-centric. I also disagree that apps lack features of a website - quite the opposite, in fact. Apps almost always give a richer user experience over a simple website - thus, their popularity.
