Little River, TX | First off maybe the nitrogen chemistry applies for folks who top dress nitrogen. My nitrogen of choice is anhydrous into bermudagrass sod, and with this high CEC clay loam nitrogen just does not leach of, nor does it turn back to a gas. Here nitrogen can persist for years and years.
Phosphate, with calcareous soils, with 6% to 10% free lime and or 8,000 ppm Ca soil test Avail will work, for a time. There are 5 or 6 forms of calcium phosphate that will form, starting the day you fertilize. Each succeeding calcium phosphate is less soluble the than the some of the others. Here it requires three times the amount of BROADCAST phosphate to accomplish what it will in a neutral soil.
We can band the phosphate in the soil and gain some time. We can use Avail and gain some time. We can put phosphate down the same slot as the anhydrous and gain even more time.
Now I have not tried deep banding 250 lbs/A 11-37-0 with 400 lbs/A anhydrous, plus Avail. Prior to planting alfalfa I feel more comfortable using Avail & deep banding 400 lbs/a 11-37-0. & Broadcasting 500 lbs/A 0-0-60, & 1,000 lbs/A K-Mag (0-0-22K-11Mg-22S) |
