A huge factor in elimination of crawl as you put it is to occasionally run the integral windows registry tool. You do this from an administrator acct in XP, go to Accessories and right click "Command Prompt", select run as and Administrator; at the command prompt type  sfc /scannow and press enter; you should have an XP installation disc handy in case the tool find curruption the program will call for the disk to be inserted so a correction to a clean initial windows registry can be attained.
