Mid Michigan
Paying off the bills from the smallest to the largest has little to do with the interest rates and more to do with reducing the amount of overwhelming clutter people have in their lives. People tend to get overwhelmed with a stack of bills coming in and it takes away their ability to focus on getting out of debt. No doubt paying the ones with the largest amount of interest first will be the most beneficial if a person could stay focused on the bills. I think his philosphy is to remove all the clutter and get more focused on the problem. It's no different than starting an engine rebuild project in a cluttered garage. If you clean the garage first it might not pay you any money at first and may actually cost you some money in lost time but it will save you time and time is money and it keeps you focused on the engine rebuild, not tripping over uneccessary tools and items all over the shop. Any big project gets done much quicker if you have and uncluttered enviroment to work in, including paying bills. It doesn't cost anything to listen to Dave on the radio. The advice is free and people can take it or leave it. If they want to know more they can buy a book or attend a seminar. I don't agree with everything he says either but he's not forcing anything on anybody. They come to him.
