NCSD | I posted a couple of weeks ago wondering about what North Dakota guys were seeing in there fields. As I stated then, we were seeing a whole lot of head diseases even though we had a fairly dry July... (and North Dakota just kept getting deluged day after day...)
In the Potter, Walworth, Campbell county areas of north central South Dakota, the general question is "what happened"
We have 80-90 bushel straw and 35-50 bushel wheat... we thought that all these fungicide applications had somewhat "bullet proofed" us from any unpleasant harvest surprises that had happened in yesteryear before all of the focus on keeping wheat plants healthy...
Throughout our growing season, we had tremendous looking wheat, very clean (from disease) plants... most producers applied an early fungicide and then another at flowering to protect against scab... the winter wheat had lots of scab, but the spring wheat didn't look bad at all...
Some are suggesting that it got too hot causing the kernels to shrivel up... Any other theories out there?
I should add, even though we had a few hot days, it was very humid and also soil moisture conditions were quite good as well... | |
