I'm not blaming the machine either - it's the OS.

Why is it so hard for you to understand that the AVERAGE USER simply wants to plug a new computer in and go? The average user does not want to fart around talking to advisors, spending endless hours on the net looking for "optimization" advice, and piling more money into an already hefty investment to make it work. For MOST people out there, a computer is a recreational device - they want to use it for email, surfing the net, watching videos, organizing family photos, etc. Having to do all that you are recommending (admittedly good advice, IMO) takes the recreational value away and makes it a job to get going.

The users who want to make a computer work for them usually will spend the time to make sure they make an informed choice of systems and learn what it will take to keep it running well.

The recreational users also are the type that will engage in risky behavior with their fancy new computer and get it infected - and then they start piling more money into it. Eventually, some learn what needs done. Some never seem to learn. The really wise ones choose a system where they don't have to do any of this and never really have to worry about malware or crawl. ;)

If you keep making excuses for a lousy, complicated, and unsecure OS that isn't fit out of the box for the average person to have a decent experience with, short of spending more time and money first, you don't have much of a grasp of the reality of the computer world.

This is no different than a person going out and buying a Polaris Ranger for riding the trails on weekends. They want to make their purchase, load it up, take it home, and start driving it. Using your logic, they would first need to add tires to the rims and buy an aftermarket roll cage to ensure their safety when riding - and pay an annual fee to use that roll cage! ;)
