Sounds like your Excel issue is due to a difference in Office release versions more-so than a Mac vs PC version of Office. You will have that same thing if you were 100% on a Mac or a PC. Newer versions of Office have capabilities that older versions cannot handle. You can save a file in an older format to be compatible with an older version of Excel, but you will lose some features or formatting in the process. 

A solution is to get everything running the latest version of Office. Get your checkbook ready - Microsoft is mighty proud of that package!  :)
