OK, that rules out the trans as a possibility. If I had it, I would hook up a PC and monitor the J1939 data link and see if there is anything else on it other than the ABS and engine controllers. I would then use the engine software and tell the engine to "ignore" any commands from other J1939 devices one at a time until you narrow it down to which module is controlling it. Then, it's anybody's guess as to why it would be doing that, but at least you could narrow it down.

As I said earlier, some engine's diagnostic software programs have a "J1939 control history" that you could also look at to see what and when a control signal was made.
