Subject: Re: question about lute

Faunsdale, AL
You'll never know. It might work, but sometimes a full dose won't work, so...................................

If you're giving it getting close to the 14-15 day time frame, it won't likely make much difference in the time to get the cow in heat over doing nothing. This is because the activity of the lutalyse is not the only thing that causes the cow to come into heat. You also need to have a group of follicles developing in the ovaries that is in synchrony with the fall of progesterone after the lutalyse does it's work. If the lutalyse works and there's no follicles ready, nothing happens until there are follicles large enough to make a lot of estrogen.

Cows generally have either a 2 or 3 wave cycle. There are either one or two waves of follicle development during each heat cycle where a group of follicles develop and then regress without even one ovulating. Only the follicle(s) in a wave that are developing when the progesterone level falls after luteolysis occurrs (either naturally or from the injection) have the potential to develop to ovulation and trigger heat behavior.

This is the reason behind multiple shot/multiple drug programs to synchronize heats...........synchronize the follicular development with the luteolysis so heat or at least ovulation occurs at a predictable time.
