She must be just starting that hole.  My chocolate lab that is fat and old has dug one so deep, last time she came up out of it she had one of those flat Chinese straw hats on!

Seriously she's probably just trying to find a cooler spot.  My dog has three strategically dug holes by trees that offer her shade at different times of the day.....labs are very smart!
