| The majority of dairys I am familiar try to keep a 18-24 month supply of feed most of the time. So a really bad crop should not put them out of business. If they had a poor run of triticale, low yields of haylage, and limited corn acres/yield, AND poor sorghum, that could very well put the hurt on a lot of dairys, depending on what thier situation was going after last fall.
There is lots of things they can do to make the feed go farther. Bring in more low quality feedstuffs, like cotton burrs, cornstalks etc. Bring in more hay from place that have it and more shelled corn.
They could also ship out the young stock for raising somewhere else. That could cut the feed bill quite abit depending on the situation.
I would surpised if any dairys that are managed well will go out of business because of lack of feed.
