NW TX Panhandle | Good question Ben. Alot of the current dairies have their own farm ground. The CA dairyman bought existing farms that they then constructed they're dairies. Thier silage yields & estimated feedstocks will obviously be short. If they start working with nearby growers soon enough, some of these abandoned fields could get chopped for silage (barring nitrate problems). Quality won't be what they want but this year no one is getting what they want. Our local feed yards also use corn silage in their rations as well & should be arranging to get their needs covered. In this area, we've recieved approx. 1" of moisture since last Nov. 2010. Add to that excessive wind since April (days w/ sustained 30 to 40+ mph) & record setting June temps. This has never happened before, period. Go back to the droughts of the 50's & 30's, this area if not mistaken recieved no less than 8" a year during those bad droughts. Yep, we're 7" short of those dry times. This is affecting every grower in West TX, OK, & SW KS.
