| FWIW,
The farm program effectively includes all these things: direct payments, ACRE, SURE, LDP's, Insurance Subsidies!, etc... and I believe it does make a difference in profitablility and ability to expand. Talked with one friend who has a couple sons involved. They are fairly large and he said they looked at their savings accounts and the money they had in analyzing the operation and farm program impacts to it. Most of the money in savings came from the SURE and ACRE income. Before someone gets the idea he might be a bad farmer, the individual is one of the best farmers I know and spends extra to make sure the yields are as good as possible. Also they run machinery long hours so as not to have to buy too many machines. He also works hard to learn what improves crop production and soil health. He also said the cattle in his part of the operation took away the ability to make ACRE pay. Same thing here with sheep.
again, fwiw,
