In the Hog Slat catalog they have 7 x 7 (flexible aircraft cable) and 7 x 19 (extra flexible aircraft cable) listed. Maybe you got the 7 x 7?

Here is how I run the cables on my barns (similar to what Pat H mentioned above):

Come out of the machine with 1/4" 7 x 19 galvanized cable. The 1/4" fits in the curtain machine pulleys better and the Galvanized is more flexible. Then at the double back pulley change to 3/16" 7 x 19 SS cable.

I've done this for years and have had really good luck.

If you want to get real fancy, you can get sprocket and chain kits for the AP curtain machines so the cable won't have to go around the pulley at the top of the curtain machine. The make a retro kit that Hog Slat sales, it eliminates the cable, but you have to remember to oil the chain!
