| Don, I showed both beef and dairy. We do not have to walk backward when showing beef cattle. You walk forward at a quicker pace. Show sticks definately help when showing beef. I find a dairy heifer will place her feet almost naturally correct with some work. A gentle tug on the show halter and a foot placed just in front of the front foot gets them to stop w/ the correct foot forward. Always comes down to putting the time in at the barn for a successful showday. Biggest problem around our area is not too many beef setups so the kids are at the mercy of their dad's to help them w/ their animal ecause they don't have a setup that the child can work safely w/ their anima. Their dad has to be out there so the calf doesn't get away from the member so that usually involves after work time when dad isn't in the mood to work w/ an ornary beef calf. I have found that if you aren't in the right mood to work w/ the calves, it's best to do something else until you can be patient. | |
