There are trapezoid shaped steel plates that you put into the ditch to keep the water from flowing too fast if the ditch has some slope. If the ditch is flat enough you don't need the plates.

I have never seen ditches installed, but I have lots of experience removing ditches like that one. Matter of fact, we have a half mile of one of those ditches around the edge of a field on the home place that seems to be more in the way every year. Pivots are just the better way to go here if at all possible.
