NW Iowa | Its true we're not off to a racing start this year. Last year there were tons of corn acres in the ground already. It'll be at least a week before much planting goes on around here. However, its important to compare that to '08 and remember we had all the flooding (cedar rapids and des moines all over the national news), and grains still dropped a ton that summer. I agree with DJM that grains, not just soy, will drop a long ways this calender year--remember than when we're setting all-time highs we can fall a looong way before people want to get back on the long wagon.
Of course there were other factors in play summer '08, but there was no supply issue like now. I wrote a few days ago that grains could easily become the fashionable buy for investors if weather continues to disappoint us. And remember they are a fickle bunch--once they've had their fill and are content with their profits, they will be done and we could drop corn $5/bu in a matter of months EVEN with strong fundamentals going into 2012. They'll reload after harvest and we start all over again. | |
