Subject: Re: young farmer questioning all the "downers"

nw iowa
in our area years ago in the 60's and 70's, a lot of bto and pioneering young farmer types who were featured in articles in sucessful farming, farm journal, and several other mags and papers, soon were either broke and gone, broke and working for some entity like soybean or corn association, working in town, and not farming .being featured as an up and comer was like the kiss of death for most of them it seemed.the small guys who worked off the farm hoping to hang on long enough for stuff to turn around so they could farm full time are mostly gone here, their 80 or quarter swallowed up by larger, better funded, farmers today.we have seen guys who inherited large amounts of money and land piddle it away and have seen small guys who everyone thought should fail turn out pretty good, you can never tell.right now the guys who inherited land or money,or ones who are in profitable off farm businesses,or the very few who either got lucky or were smart enough to have got out of the stock/investment type markets before they crashed are about the only guys buying farmland here.until you have been through a depression, recession,or had all your lending yanked out from under your operation, dont dis the older guys on here for being a tad cautionary.instead, like others said, listen and learn from guys who have done it,do your homework.
