| The linkage likely is very worn. Some of the wear may be adjusted out. Like its not getting all the way in gear. The shift linkage runs two shafts and each shaft has a cam on the inside of the transmission that actually shifts the clutches and gears. On the outside face of each cam, there is a groove with dimples at each shift position to hold it in gear. The ball and spring for those can break, or the linkage be so worn it doesn't shove the cam far enough for the ball and spring to drop in the dimple, and then it pops out of gear. If you look at the linkage on the right side of the transmission, you can confirm not be move far enough by moving the cam further towards reverse than the linkage accomplished and should feel the detent ball take over.
Or it can be worn clutch fingers that tend to push it out of gear. Hope its not been run forever with the linkage not getting it all the way in gear.
