Unless regulations have changed in the last 24 months (which is entirely possible) that is not true. As long as it cash balances at the end of every day you have access to the capital. From a speculative perspective pulling that cash out and having the discipline is very important.

You can immediately apply the money received for selling a call to offset the purchase of a put. (sell a call worth 30 cents, buy a put for 70 cents, immediate cash out lay is 40 cents plus commission). If the market moves upward, of course every day you are going to get a margin call.
