Leaving a feature off of a device is not "locking it down". I suspect you are referring to examples such as the iPad lacking an SD card slot, etc. Using that logic, I could argue that most desktop PC's are "locked down" since they don't incorporate the monitor and computer into one, compact device like my iMac - and that is simply not the case. My iPhone has a 30 pin connector that no other smartphone on the market has. This allows a considerable number of accessories to work with the phone in ways that Android phones are incapable of. That does not mean that the iPhone is "open" and Android phones are "locked down". When it comes to hardware features such as these examples, it boils down to user preference. If you insist on having an SD card slot on your tablet, by all means buy an Android tablet then. Apple products are and typically always have been cutting edge. If Apple felt there was enough "market" out there t include the SD slot, it would have been on the device. In reality, there are other options out there now to provide that functionality. The sales numbers of these devices is proof enough that the majority of the market does not insist on having it.

The porn thing has been brought up in the past, not necessarily on this forum but in other places, as an example of Apple "locking down" their app store. After surfing around in the iTunes App Store vs Android Market, it is kind of nice not having to wander through all that sludge. But if a person was into porn on their phone, they would have a valid point.
