If the area isn't awfully large you can lay a rope on the ground around it's perimeter. Supposedly snakes will not crawl over a rope. I knew a lady that was deathly afraid of snakes & she had a rope around her house plus parked her car in an area with a rope around it's perimeter. She claimed it worked.
