I was once reprimanded by a farmer on a service call on a sprayer for opening up a line without knowing what was in it. Best lesson I had about spray safety. I also learned a tech can be too careful about not leaving traces of his presence. A farmer once called the shop to ask if I'd been out to see his tractor (minor oil leak under the seat so it wasn't easy for him to tell if I'd fixed it; I sure wasn't cleaning the oily sawdust from the cab!). After that, I moved the machine or did something if the repair itself wasn't obvious. Back to your comment about what to do about the tech. Give him a bottle of hand cleaner and a box of towels, then ask him to use them. Surely he'll get the hint. I've run into a few shop people who have this idea that it's only a tractor/whatever. They need to be tuned in to the current reality of farmers taking pride in their machines. |
