Found a little: http://www.shopfloortalk.com/forums/archive/index.php?t-10239.html Eric c. 02-10-2007, 10:47 PM I dont post here much but as I have seen pvc explode twice in real life I feel I need to at least share. The First time I saw it happen was in 95' in a chillwater pump house,it was my first day with this particular company and they were testing some 6'' sch 80 pipe with air.I was one floor below where it exploded and it sounded like a huge ballon had been popped and billions of shards went everywhere, one guy got some in his eyes. Before this I had no idea this would happen. The second time was in 03' at a water plant with a new ozone filter system that had miles of plastic and stainless pipe, the company I was installing a monorail crane for was testing lines and doing punch-out work so most of the pipe hands were gone and mostly flunkys left.I was going down to the compressor room to check some stuff and noticed water and white shards all over the ground,A 4" line (pvc) had a leak and it had been repaired,so they brought it back up to test pressure with air from the plant compressor and boom!I know lots of people that have pvc air lines, but if I were planning a new shop I would avoid the danger http://lumberjocks.com/topics/4330 aving witnessed a PVC failure first hand in a shop I worked in, I will not use it for air line. The shop I worked in had added some square footage and ran 2” Schd 40 PVC as a temp. air line. The line failed at a coupling, a fellow working at a bench received a laceration on the top of his of his skull about 6 inches long that went to the bone. Bled like a stuck hog – the rest of the pieces took out two eight foot light fixtures, not just knocking them down but breaking them beyond use. The only thing the investigation could come up with for the failure was an unseen weak spot in the pipe. This pipe did not “come apart” it exploded. All that damage from 100 PSI. I might use it in a pinch, but not for long and not as a main run. http://nerfhaven.com/forums/lofiversion/index.php?t18415.html I can say from first hand experience that PVC can throw off shards that are essentially knife blades, flying and spinning wildly enough to make a ninja movie special effects tech proud I've not found photos or video yet. So far when I try a search creates so many hits I'm having trouble sorting through them to find what we are looking for. When I seached for "pvc air line" explosion and clicked images one of the hits was my picture on AgTalk! |
