Performance either way will be the same, although your steering screens may pop up a little bit faster when hooked through the CAN line. Otherwise, during regular operation, you shouldn't see any difference in performance, since the guidance messages are still sent through the GPS side rather than the programming side. I would say not to hook everything together right to the battery or else you'll see that all the lights on the node stay on all the time, and after maybe a week you will see the battery go dead if the machine is not being started. You can definitely hook both white wires together and put them right to the battery, along with the heavier red wire, but you'll want to hook the ligher gauge red wire to a clean source of power that is only hot when either the key is on or the guidance console is powered up. Usually the console cable will have some kind of aux power wire that is only hot when the monitor is powered up. You should be able to hook right up to that, or check out the power diagram in the manual where they explain how to hook up a relay in line with the key switch. That way you'll get clean power to the circuit board in the node but not draw down the battery when everything else is shut down.
