NEWTON, IL (SE IL.) | After much trouble with a 2004 6.0 I actually had the opportunity to talk to an engineer about the problems with the 6.0 engines. Yes, there has been BILLIONS spent on warranty issues. The problem is two-fold. First, the EPA is a problem because they're trying to make a diesel engine perform beyond what it is capable of. We can not use a waste gate any more, and also have to use exhaust-gas-recirculation. The turbo chargers now use a variable pitch fin design that is electronically operated. This is a major failure issue. All diesel engines now have, or soon will have this design of a turbo. In the near future it is predicted you will see many new over-the-road trucks broken down waiting for a tow because of this.
Secondly, the engineer said the engines are now designed for highway cruising, - only way to pass emmisions.
We use Ford S.D. trucks here at our dealership to deliver equipment. Hence we have major problems. When pulling a 15000 lb implement, that should be no problem because the truck is rated to pull 12500 lbs. right? Not only are we 2500 lbs over the limit, there is no way to figure in the wind drag.
Bottom line is the 7.3 was a workhorse, the 6.0 is a highway cruiser. No way is a smaller cubic inch displacement ever going to be a better workhorse. Get ready for all diesels to turn to junk, or maybe the EPA will ease up a little. Or maybe some guru will come up with a better design.
We still buy the Fords because the others won't hold up. Something that is disturbing about Ford though, they donate big bucks to the gay rights folks.
This is my two cents worth on a subject that will still get a lot of debate I'm sure. | |
