Hagen Brothers farms,Goodrich ND | Hedgetree, I did not explain myself very well in the above post. When you install the regulator plug so you can hook up your gen light, you should also connect the red #2 wire to the "BAT"stud on the rear of the alternator along with the output wire to the tractor. While this wire is not important as long as you have the "1 wire" regulator installed, it is very important should you ever want to install an alternator with the standard "3 wire" regulator. The red #2 sense wire is where a standard regulator senses system voltage and tells the alternator to cut back the charge rate when the voltage hits 14.2 volts.
If the red #2 wire is not hooked to battery voltage, the standard regulator will sense no voltage and tell the alternator to charge flat out all the time which will quickly destroy the alternator and battery.
Although the old charge light has done it's job for 40 years, as some of the others have stated, a voltmeter will give you more useful information as to if the alternator is undercharging, overcharging or right where it should be. Problem is to mount one so it does not look "cobbled". on. There is likely room to cut a hole and fit one to the stock dash panel, where you need only to connect the + terminal to a terminal that turns on with the ignition switch and connect the - terminal to ground. Your call if you think it is worth installing.
