Subject: You should install a voltmeter

Le Sueur VIA St.Thomas
Ammeters were quite necessary back in the days of generators and regulators. The alternator represents a huge jump in technology. Another benefit of the alternator is the ease in which it can be monitored; A voltmeter is the best way of doing it. Use this opportunity to turn lemons into lemonade.

Since alternators are internally regulated, ammeters are no longer very important. And since it is cheaper to replace an alternator than repace one, your best bet is to monitor it so you don't get stranded somewhere. you could still install an idiot light, but it would be more work and yield less benefits than a voltmeter. A voltmeter can be installed virtually anywhere and the electrical hookups are super easy. A voltmeter also has the potential of alerting you to problems way before an idiot light ever could.

You've updated 90% of your electrical system, now it's time to do the last 10%

good luck -jim
