West Texas | I have several fields in drip, and for the most part, I am well-satisfied with the system.
Be warned that it is vulnerable to gopher damage, but on the other hand, it won't be blown away to Oz in windstorms, which has happened to a couple of my pivots and siderolls.
For best results, your field should be fairly level. And above all, keep the water CLEAN! Yearly maintenance goes a long way toward extending the life of your system. Our oldest system is 15 years old, and still going. I have no idea how long it will last, but the installer told us he expected it to last 20 years, with care.
I had one small patch of alfalfa in drip, and it worked well until I neglected routine acidizing, and the hair roots infiltrated and plugged the emitters. So much for that crop. :-(
You should certainly consult with a professional installer to survey your acreage and determine feasibility and costs. Eco-Drip in Garden City TX is one such outfit that does installation as well. | |
