| Seven year lifespan? Probably it is when the tapes were made in 1980's and 1990's. Logically in this 21st century, the better improved plastic compounds are used in making underground tapes, lengthening the lifespan beyond seven years.
Infrared technology is available pretty cheap enough to mount on bars such as cultivators to measure the ground temp to find a cold spot, ergo a plugged hole. Repair it before the crop gets stressed.
The key to an extra long life of SDI, I believe, is to install an extra foot of tape for every 10 or 15 feet in the ground to prevent stress damages from winter ground heaving, digging, and handling field repairs.
