I'd say he is the smart one if it's working for him.  That doesn't mean it would make any sense at all to someone in the commercial business. 

Being extremely picky is one of the lessor traits which contribute to the undesirablity of the 'horse market' customer to the average hayman.  Their tendancy to not pay or pay with bad funds and throw fits including legal action with no good cause are the more major problems.  Their  tendancy toward general lack of knowledge of animal nutrition and tendancy to not be smart enough to know the difference between real forage quality factors and factors which only effect appearance fall in the irritating category.
