i tried the hose clamp idea, and it fatigued and  broke the tail off.  Could well be  a factor of working in different conditions though.    Its not an expensive or difficult thing to try..

Incidentally, our machine had come new from the dealer at the end of '94 with the zip ties fitted.  I  didnt realise they weren't factory installed.
