Good luck finding book...don't know where it's available. I haven't Googled either. Lots of familiar historical names in book. Allison-Fisher (Body by Fisher!)-Indy race drivers, etc.

James Allison started the V12 boat engines pre 1920. The Allison V1710 we know today was sketched on paper on May 7, 1929. First prototype on March 12, 1932. However, those early designs had trouble on the dynos as military demanded more h.p. (sound familiar?). In 1936 they stopped work on the project to regroup. Solutions were found by hiring one single-solitary young engineer, Ronald M Hazen. 13 weeks later the new YV1710-3 solved it's problems. In Dec. 1936, the 1st airplane w/a V1710 lifted off from Wright Field (Dayton OH). It was a modified A-11.

They just kept boosting the h.p. from that point throughout WWII.

Bob Bend's MM UB was 1st Allison tractor I believe. We saw it a lot in IL in the 60s.
