In GM's they went to a six speed auto becuase they went to a locking rearend that for some reason required 3.73 ratio, the 6th over drive was to make it like a 5 speed with 3.4 rearend. Most of the manuals add a lower first gear for easier starting. I dont know about the others. I would geuss they have to because emmisions are killing the Diesels once great efficiancy.
