Subject: New Pickups: More gears= same mileage??!

I was reading the post below about the new light duty diesel engines. It reminded of something I had been thinking for some time. Every year it seems the truck makers bring out a new transmission (auto or man.) with more gears. Now they come with 6 speeds. When I first began driving everything was 3 speed auto or 4 speed man. Yet I can't say that the new truck I could buy today similar to my first truck gets any better MPG. Just curious as to why? Anybody know ? Any guesses? My thought is it is because of all the pollution control and government regs.
